We wish we could show you the catalogs for each of the 57 years Camp Morehead was open but for the 50s we have found only pieces of 51, 52, 54, 56, & 57, the complete 58 catalog & the following general 50s pieces so far. We would really appreciate it if anyone could find Camp catalogs and send them to us for scanning into the system (contact Webmaster for mailing address). We will guarantee that they will be returned unharmed.

The following are some excerpts from unidentified 50s catalogs.

(Feel free to send a message to put with some of these pictures)

"Leatherneck" leatherneck.jpg (30490 bytes) Cap'n Pat once told me that this photo of the Leatherneck was taken for the catalog just after George McCabe had finished building the superstructure (about 1950). Those are his boys on board: Larry (right) and Temple. (Royster Chamblee)

Net Fishing fish-sein.jpg (94979 bytes) It's a seine (did I spell it right?) and there really were a lot of weird things in the sound, including fish!

The Old Fleet netting_mullet.jpg (36961 bytes) I found this among some old negatives and had a contact print made. I may have taken this picture around 1950. It looks like the kids are pulling a net, but the main interest for me is the old fleet.

Most of the boats have mahogany transoms, which makes them the Lightnings. With magnification, it appears that four boats have white transoms. The largest is probably the "Judge", the smallest one of the Comets, and the other two might be the "Ellen" and the "Mariner". (The "Ellen" was later converted to a motor boat.) Beyond the right-most Lightning is a boat with sails furled. I expect that is the "Pattie Jay". On the horizon loams Marker 12. (Royster Chamblee)

The game (and the name) of "Knuckleball" was the collective invention of Camp Morehead campers. It evolved from a table bowling game that was in the gym during the 1940's. From the top, it looked about like the drawing above.

The floor was sloped about 10 degrees, except for the stage where the ten-pins were to be set up. The balls were stopped by a board at the end. But campers soon tired of setting up the pins and began using them as mallets to hit the wooden balls back and forth. The object was to keep as many going as possible. The result was abraded knuckles. Cap'n Pat bowed to the inevitable in the early '50's and had George McCabe build a table with the right side identical to the left side: no flat stage and the players' end open all the way across.

For catalog purposes, the game was referred to as "Mallet Ball," but no one actually called it that. At one time, some Official "Mallet Ball" Tables were built for sale.

I have heard that campers at Sea Gull play Knuckleball to this day. [Royster Chamblee]

Camp Letterhead letterhead_crawford.jpg (137654 bytes) Yes, the mailing address was Kinston and everyone went inland for the winter... The printing was actually blue, by the way - the green comes from aged paper and no time to work Adobe Photoshop properly...

Sailfish Rigging sailfish-rigging.jpg (217507 bytes) Real board boats for real men!

View Of The Pier 1956_pier_live_oaks.jpg (194798 bytes) Looking through the live oaks to the pier. An undeveloped Bogue Sound. What a concept!
