| "Leatherneck" |

Cap'n Pat once told me that this photo of the Leatherneck
was taken for the catalog just after George McCabe had finished building the
superstructure (about 1950). Those are his boys on board: Larry (right) and Temple.

It's a seine (did I spell it right?) and there really

| The Old Fleet |
 |
I found this among some old negatives and had a contact
print made. I may have taken this picture around 1950. It looks like the kids are pulling
a net, but the main interest for me is the old fleet. Most of the boats have mahogany
transoms, which makes them the Lightnings. With magnification, it appears that four boats
have white transoms. The largest is probably the "Judge", the smallest one of
the Comets, and the other two might be the "Ellen" and the "Mariner".
(The "Ellen" was later converted to a motor boat.) Beyond the right-most
Lightning is a boat with sails furled. I expect that is the "Pattie Jay". On the
horizon loams Marker 12. (Royster Chamblee) |

| |_________| The game (and the name)
of "Knuckleball" was the collective invention of Camp Morehead campers. It
evolved from a table bowling game that was in the gym during the 1940's. From the top, it
looked about like the drawing above.
The floor was sloped about 10 degrees, except for the stage where the ten-pins were to
be set up. The balls were stopped by a board at the end. But campers soon tired of setting
up the pins and began using them as mallets to hit the wooden balls back and forth. The
object was to keep as many going as possible. The result was abraded knuckles. Cap'n Pat
bowed to the inevitable in the early '50's and had George McCabe build a table with the
right side identical to the left side: no flat stage and the players' end open all the way
across.
For catalog purposes, the game was referred to as "Mallet Ball," but no one
actually called it that. At one time, some Official "Mallet Ball" Tables were
built for sale.
I have heard that campers at Sea Gull play Knuckleball to this day. [Royster
