Open Letter To The Camp Morehead Virtual Reunion Since our reunion in May, 1996 (yes, it was over two years ago) and the launching of the Camp Morehead Virtual Reunion Web Site, I've been amazed at the number of people who have visited the site and participated by corresponding. It's more than 150 people who've corresponded so far, and probably many others who have simply surfed the site. I live in Northern California - 3,000 miles away and near a very different ocean. Nevertheless, the stories and notes take me to a less complicated and wonderful time. I thank each of you for the privilege of working with you on the site. It has been a unique way to be in touch with the "lifetime friends" Purcell used to talk about. It didn't mean that much to me at the time, but it does now. The reason for this letter is to update you on my situation and ask for help. My family and business and family need more of my time than I can easily give. I cannot continue putting in the hours to do email updates and maintain the site. In addition, we have recently hit our two year date from the original funding. We used some excess money from the May-96 reunion to pay for our web name registration and the internet service provider which hosts the site. This money has been used up. To keep operating monthly, we need some more funding. It's not all about money, though. It's also about the expertise to run the site and creative ideas to keep it fresh. So, we're asking for your money or your time. When I first started asking around about this, I got this great note from one of the more inspirational people I've met, Arnie Hite (remember, "Wake up, young warriors!")... Cap'n George, Of course I'm willing to help with funds or my time. I'm sure many others will too. While my computer skills are better than average, I've never managed a web site, nor would I know how. On the other hand how hard can it be? I had never sailed a boat by myself until that fateful day Cap'n Purcell assigned me to Sunfish Instruction.... Now that I think about it, I never shot a single action 22 rifle or had a gun safety course before I was in charge of the rifle range. It was the Camp Morehead way. Say! If we get enough people around it, and all lift together, can we lift the Camp Morehead web site off the ground and move it down to the water or into the gym? Let me know how I can help. Cap'n Arnie What's neededWe pay our internet service provider $20/month. For that we get a high bandwidth connection and they worry about the server. Pretty good, huh? We also pay $35/year to keep the web name www.campmorehead.com. What don't we have? An automated way to keep the directory and your email comments posted & up to date. I'd like to automate the site to do these things. The programming expense to (I'm guessing) is about $500 to $1,000- a one-time charge. Here's a summary of the expenses: Annualized web site expenses
What we're asking for is your commitment for either time or money. Here's what to do:
Thanks to each of you, and smooth sailin'. Tom Palmer has agreed to summarize your responses and help to assess and publish them. Win will handle the money. I thank the both for stepping forward. Sincerely, George Jones
