Core Sound Waterfowl Museum Testimonials

Dear Camp Morehead Alumni,

The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum is honored to be a part of recognizing the work of Capt. Purcell and Helen Jones. They have been an asset to our entire community and state, and we are proud to be working with the Camp Morehead Alumni committee to lead this effort in recognizing their accomplishments and contributions.

The first step in this process began last May with Camp Morehead's Reunion where a gift of $1,000 was presented to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum in honor of Capt. Purcell and Helen. From that a growing interest developed with the idea of establishing a room at the museum in their honor. Bob Richards, Danny McQueen and others close to Purcell provided the groundwork for bringing together this idea.

Enclosed you will find a letter of support from Terry Holland that was planned for mailing in December. In the meantime, BB&T in Morehead City became interested in the project and began work on presenting the initial gift to this campaign. Purcell served many years on the Board of Directors for BB&T. After a lengthy budget process, we are pleased to announce their major gift of $30,000 to this fund as announced in their letter also enclosed. This corporate gift has been accompanied by a contribution of $10,000 from Pat Joyce and $5,000 from L. A. Downey & Son, business associates of Capt. Purcell in the development of the Camp Morehead site.

A goal of $100,000 has been set for the Capt. Purcell and Helen Jones Fund. This commitment will establish a room at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum where their lifetime contributions will be permanently honored by the many people whose lives they have been so much a part of. This is an exciting project and one that we are sure will be enjoyed and treasured by everyone involved.

We invite you to be a part of this project through your giving to the Jones Fund. You will find with this mailing a pledge form to include with your gift. Please mark your form for the Purcell and Helen Jones Fund so that all gifts from the Camp Morehead family will be correctly directed to this effort. We look forward to working with each of you in giving back to Capt. Purcell and Helen a portion of the love they have given to all who were a part of Camp Morehead's legacy.

Sincerely,

Don Walston & Janice Smith, Co-Chairs
Core Sound Waterfowl Museum

Dear Camp Morehead Alumnus:

Although I missed the Camp Morehead Reunion because of a University of Virginia fund raising event in New York, my thoughts were definitely in Morehead City while sitting in the Rainbow Room. Captain Purcell and Helen have meant so much to so many people through the years that it is impossible to properly thank them.

One way that seems particularly appropriate is to support the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harker's Island. In addition to young people, Captain Purcell's next love is duck hunting and the protection of our natural resources. The Waterfowl Museum was the beneficiary of a special gift from the Camp Morehead Reunion. By adding to this $1,000 gift, we can have a room or exhibit named after Captain Purcell and Helen with signage that it was given by the Camp Morehead Alumni.

Given Captain Purcell's commitment to the area and his love of all the museum preserves, this seems to be a good focus for recognizing for all time the contributions made to the local community by these two outstanding residents. The museum will be an educational and economic resource for Carteret County and all of Eastern North Carolina. The plans are ambitious, but well within reach as corporate sponsors and the State of North Carolina ($100,000 grant for first phase of construction) step forward to help.

Only one thing has been more important to Purcell Jones than preserving the future of waterfowl - that is Camp Morehead and the men and women who were shaped by Captain Purcell and Helen into caring, responsible, giving adults. We hope you and all the Camp Morehead family will understand that together we can give to the Jones family this gift of thanks they so deserve.

Thank you for considering a gift in time for the January 1997 ground breaking. This will be a living memorial that we will all look forward to visiting.

Sincerely,

Terry Holland
Director of Athletics, University of Virginia

(note: Terry chaired the NCAA men's basketball selection committee in 1997. It was great to see him with Billy Packer on CBS when the 64 selections were made- nice job, coach!)

Dear Camp Morehead Alumni:

In finalizing our bank's 1997 operating budget, we have pledged to fund a contribution to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum Capital Campaign. With its commitment to the coastal areas, BB&T views this as a excellent opportunity to salute the efforts of those individuals who have worked so hard in preserving our waterfowl heritage. Additionally, we feel that the museum will remind generations to come of the importance of our obligation to preserve this rich history.

Our pledge of support honors Purcell Jones, an individual known for his dedication to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. Purcell Jones, one of the first individuals to share with me his personal commitment to this project, served for many years on our bank's local advisory board. Our pledge of $30,000 will be designated toward an exhibit room named in his honor. A fund was established by Camp Morehead Alumni for this purpose during the reunion held last year. Individually, you have an opportunity to contribute toward the goal of completing this exhibit room. Our contributions will serve to make the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum a reality, while thanking Purcell Jones for his service and dedication to this project.

Sincerely,

J. Frank Bullard, III
Senior Vice President, Branch Banking & Trust
