Who Are We

We are a group of people who worked together, played together, grew up together, and developed lifetime friendships at a truly unique place: Camp Morehead By-the-Sea. Operated from 1938 to 1995, Camp Morehead was our summer camp as children and the best place on earth to be as a counselor during high school and college years. It was located near Morehead City, North Carolina. This web site is about the people who were there. It's our way of keeping in touch with each other in an era which is different than the one we experienced at camp.

In August, 1995, Camp Morehead was closed for good. Purcell and Helen Jones had decided, after a long and very successful career running camp, that the economics no longer made sense. They are developing this unique property on Bogue Sound into beautiful homesites. We are grateful to Purcell and Helen for a major contribution to our lives, and for their permission to use the Camp Morehead name on this site.

In May, 1996, we had a turnout of about 300 former campers, counselors, and staff in Morehead City for a reunion. It was such a great event that we decided to keep it going by creating this web site. Much like camp itself, this site depends on the individual contributions of many people. If you'd like to post a message or picture, your fellow Camp Moreheaders will have instant access to it.

This site was initially underwritten for 12-18 months from left-over contributions originally donated to the "gift fund" for the Camp Morehead Reunion Weekend. After the originally intended gifts were fully funded, the organizers of the reunion weekend felt that it was appropriate to utilize a portion of the remaining money to provide this opportunity for ongoing interactions among Camp Morehead alumni.
